Moving Whirl Merry Go Round: Who is Vendor & Are They Safe?
Posted: 07 Aug 07 10:34 PM

Hi all!  I have heard that merry-go-rounds are outlaw goods these days, but wondered whether the moving whirls are also non-approved?  These are merry go round bases with a center pole (our is 5' high).  There is webbing from the base to the apex, so it looks like a christmas tree.  If the kid sits inside the whirl, the webbing acts to keep him inside.  Kids riding outside have tons of grabbing spots for safety.  Yes?  No?

We really want a whirl for our play space, but have only found one manufacturer.  Anybody know how I can get one?  Thank you!

I'm not sure but I think GameTime has a merry go round.  But I don't know about the webbing that you describe...I just recall seeing one in a catalog last year that was a basic merry-go-round type of thing.

You'd just want to check with whoever owns the land that you are planning the playground on...county, city, public school, and go by their recommendations.  There are still parks that have merry go rounds, but more and more public schools are staying away from them, afraid of the lawsuit-happy culture that we live in today.

We put one of the new ones in a playground recently our crew said you really couldn't get it going very fast - and that's sort of the whole point - so I' try something else that spins like the xcelerator or tornado.
