Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

nobody believes in me..
Posted: 07 Jul 07 10:22 PM

I need some support or some advice. I thought that this was a great idea, and then when my brother and my father and a couple of other people told me that its a waste of time and that I would never be able to raise enough money for a wheelchair accessible playground, it just made me think twice. They tell me that I can't just change a playground for kids in a wheelchair, and I said yes I can everyuone will be able to play, and they still continue to tell me that my idea is not going to work. Any ideas? any support?

Hi Sammy-- I guess the question is, do YOU believe that you can do it?  If so, then it can be done... you don't mention how old you are, but if you are not of adult age and are depending upon your father for support, then my advice would be to do some research on the internet.  There are lots of wheelchair accessible playgrounds.  Generally, all of the playground manufacturers feature some of these playgrounds in their catalogs.  I would create a notebook of the different playgrounds, and different news media articles related to these playgrounds, and if possible, try to contact some of the people that helped create some of these playgrounds.  Keep this notebook and show it to your father and brother...while a lot of these playgrounds are very large in scale, yours doesn't "have to" be... you can make small changes on a local playground that will benefit kids in wheelchairs, and like you said, all kids will be able to play... it's not just for kids in wheelchairs, it's a playground for everyone of all abilities.

You would be surprised at the places that would likely help you with your project... talk to insurance agencies, orthopedic centers, pediatric therapy centers, soda pop bottling companies... you would be surprised at how many people would be interested in helping to get a playground for disabled children off the ground.  And don't forget to look for local parent-support-groups of kids with disabilities-- you would probably find a good number of interested parents, and then when THEY talk to their employers, that helps to bring in even more funds.

I found this online tonight and it made me think of your situation...

"If anyone calls you a dreamer, remind them that the building they work in came from a dreamer, the car they're driving came from a dreamer. The computer they love, the cell phone they use, movies and music they escape in - all came from dreamers."   (JD Fortune, dreamer, and new lead singer for INXS)
