Ideas for play and playgrounds from around the globe....
posted by jblumstock  on Nov 27 2008
I've found that no matter how breathtaking the scenery, no matter how fabulous the food, what children really enjoy about any vacation are the new playgrounds they get to play in.  This was certainly the case during a recent trip to Budapest.  Happily for us, the city takes playgrounds ve....

Any suggestions or anecdotes regarding volunteer shennanigans? For example, what to do with a volunteer who is napping on your unassembled
equipment pieces, etc.

I would say carry them over to the mulch pile and burry them in there!

But seriously, I would probably ask them if they would rather work on something different, and if they seemed too disinterested I may ask them politely if they were really interested in helping out or if their time could maybe be better spent at home. Also, make sure that you are doing everything within your control to keep the day exciting and fun. Hold a raffle, have loud music, and get people dancing! Nothing makes a build go smoother than excited, dancing, singing volunteers.

Having some Build Captains, as KaBOOM! has on the builds that we lead, really can help with this problem too! That way, each small group of people has a committed cheerleader rallying the troops!

Or what about giving them a specific job? When you're one of 50 people on a mulch team it might be easy to slip off & nap, but what if you're the only person in charge of distributing tools? Or restocking the water coolers? Sometimes a little responsibility is all it takes to get someone motivated!

Or if that fails, definitely bury them in the mulch :)

Send them on an errand to run, like "would you take this money and go to the store and bring back a case of water?".  Then when they return, thank them and tell them that was all you needed, and if they are feeling done for the day, they can go home, or if they want to stay a bit longer, that you've got a job that you can give them and that they'll have to get it done otherwise it will mess up some other people's work... then it will be their choice to either leave, or get to work...
