I just had a bowling fundriaser at a local bowling alley and I had raised the amount of $2.146! I had got tweleve lane sponsors and some people gave me $100 for a lane but most gave me $25. It is a great idea if you have a lot of family and friends and also if you have a local bowling alley that is....

Drain Tiles
Posted: 22 May 07 11:52 AM Modified By RPAG on 5/22/2007 11:58:36 AM)
We will need to add drain tiles to our playground site due to water drainage/pooling issues. Has anyone had experinence in doing this? I understand we will have to dig 4 inches down, add rocks, then cover the rocks with a liner (geo-tex fabric) and finally the mulch goes on top. Our park district traditionally does this process sequentially over several days -- grading 4 inches down, creating post holes, putting in equipment, then adding rock, fabric, mulch. We learned 1st hand at the Atlanta WePlay! that the Kaboom model quite different. So, my question is, where in the Kaboom process do drain tiles figure in -- during site prep or on build day? If the rocks go in during site prep, is it safe for people to walk on the rocks during the build?

I've never actually installed drain tiles on a playground site, but as far as the KaBOOM! build process goes I think it would make sense to install them on Prep Day.  If you're concerned about having rocks on site over top of the drain, maybe consider using pea gravel-- this would also drain water through but be considerably less hazardous to have on the site.

But I'm a bit concerned about the process as you've explained it.  Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it seems like you're planning on putting just a thin layer of geo-tex fabric (like landscaping felt?) over the gravel and then putting safety surfacing over that.  My concern with this plan is that if the safety surfacing (which can move because it's a loose-fill material) is swept away from over the drain area, there's nothing between a kid's head and that rock or gravel except a thin layer of landscaping felt.  Safety surfacing vendors sell a layer of padding that you could buy in a square the size of your drain tiles and put on top of the gravel, under the fabric, that would make this all much safer.  Here's an example: http://www.zeager.com/wcduradrain.htm.  Actually, this product in particular can actually take the place of the gravel or rock layer entirely, being suitable to lay directly over the drain & allow water through but still provide cushioning for under the safety surfacing.  I'm sure your safety surfacing vendor could explain all this in better detail, but I hope this helps.

Happy playground building!

We've placed gravel and drains under filter fabric without a problem.  Most installations require 10 to 12" of wood fiber.  If wear mats are placed under swings and other areas prone to wear you shouldn't have a problem.  If your maintainance and inspection is so poor that you get a 10" deep hole in your surfacing and haven't seen it, you've got more serious problems in just managing the playground.  I think the idea of pea gravel for the drains is a good one.  It has more drainage capacity than regular "sharp" gravel and at one time it was used as a safety surfacing.  It and sand have fallen out of favor because they lack ADA accessability, and sand had the loose cat/litterbox problem.  Wanted to add that we're looking at a flattened drain system called Multi-FLOW (www.varicore.com) because we could install it spaced every 6 to 8 feet with a thinner layer of gravel than we are currently using for 4" corrugated drain pipe.
