| More About Me |
| I am 35 years old and proud mother of 3 boys. A pediatric RN and a volunteer in the children's ministry at my church. My home, work and church life revolve around children which makes it only more fitting that this is my cause.
In April 2008, I passed by North Birminghan Elementary school just as I had so many other times. But, this time was distinctively different for me. As I sat watching the smiling faces of the students that were crossing the street, I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between the happy children and with one look to my left, there sat their playground. Mostly a bare field cluttered with weeds and a few orange traffic cones. Only one or two actual play structures and those were OLD, to say the least. My heart sank and I thought to myself, "How, sad. Those kids need a new playground." and that thought was answered with a sound so audible I almost looked around the empty vehicle to be certain that I was alone.
The reply, "You are going to help them."
Where did that come from?
"Me? Help with what?", I thought to myself.
"Yes, you. You can do this."
Now, I know it sounds crazy to most people, but I believe this was being put on my heart by God. And then a certain energy came over me and I was motivated to make a change. Me,? Motivated? Yes! Even though I have never done anything like this before, I am passionate about getting these children a new playground.
A trivial task to some, but if you think about some of your fondest childhood memories, do they not involve play? Even as adults, we play. Some people golf, some go to movies with friends, some people scrapbook. All of it is a form of play. Something that you enjoy doing, therefore it is not called work or a chore.
Ask yourself, would I allow my children to play there?
