New York Tries to Think Outside the Sandbox

Boycomingoffslide.jpgNew York City, with its rich history of public playgrounds, is on the verge of a bold experiment in the way children play, one that could accelerate the trend away from monkey bars, swings and seesaws used by generations of city children.

In an unusual public-private partnership, the city is developing a playground near the South Street Seaport that will have trained “play workers” on hand to help children interact with features of the new playground: water, ramps, sand and specially designed objects meant to spur the imagination.

It is very exciting to see this type of out of the box thinking for playground design. While the standard post and platform dominates the playground landscape, it is refreshing to see that playground companies are researching and developing products that are more engaging provide and provide more "risk" while at the same time meeting safety guidelines. Kids need a playground that stimulates the mind and the imagination. Having a 3 year old, has given me this perspective. When I take her to the local playground, she spends more time on the fire engine than the actual playground. Fresh and innovative ideas need to be discussed and demanded in the marketplace. It is time to go beyond the norm and test the limits of creativity. We want to make sure our kids experience risk taking on the playground, we ourselves should also take a risk and shake things up with playgrounds and playspaces. I commend the risk taking that the NYC Parks is taking for the betterment of our children.
