The International School of Louisiana, which recently moved back to New Orleans from its post-hurricane temporary site in Kenner LA, was founded by parents in 2000. At this unique school, students from grade K-6 are taught in 3 languages, English, Spanish and French. On the day of the build, over 300 students were present, shouting cheers of support to the volunteers and adding their own special touches to the new playground by creating mosaic tiles which were placed around the structure.
The ISL received this playground thanks to Gill who was the 2006 recipient of The Home Depot Humanitarian Award at the 41st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. The award recognizes country music artists who serve others, have a generous spirit and help build the dreams of those in need. In addition to recognition at the Awards show, the Humanitarian Award recipient is honored with a KaBOOM! playground donated by The Home Depot built in the city of their choice. Gill selected New Orleans as the site for his playground in order to help the city rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Among the special guests, Senator David Vitter attended the build to lend a helping hand, shoveling mulch and helping to paint a mural on the side of the school. After a day of hard work, the new playground was complete and to celebrate Gill joined the kids in singing their rendition of John Lennon’s classic “Imagine” in front of the newly-constructed playground. City Councilwoman Shelley Midura was also on hand to help unveil the playground, proclaiming September 25th International Day of Play. Thanks to Gill, The Home Depot, The Academy of Country Music and many other valuable participants, KaBOOM! was able to provide the kids at the International School of Louisiana a great, bright and musical place to play!
