Valuable Advice From the Experts in Community-Build ProjectsA First Time 'U Play!'-er's Blog THE ENERGY HERE IS. . .JUST . . ‘WOW’. Sharon Thompson had barely heard of KaBOOM! before arriving in Chicago for U Play!. Her company, Keystone Murphy Health Plans, assists families who don’t have health insurance in getting medical attention. They are interested in building a playground in a low-income area of Philadelphia where many of their clients live and work. She found her Fundraising 101 class this afternoon very inspiring and was impressed with the generosity of corporations in supporting the mission of KaBOOM!. But most of all she was impressed with the contagious energy of KaBOOM! and plans to start working on Keystone’s playground project as soon as she gets back to the office.
ASK THE EXPERTS!: If you need questions answered about building a playground you'll get the best answers from people who have either completed a play space project or are in the process. In yesterday's afternoon session, a panel of five community project leaders gave frank advice to the U Play! audience on what it takes to build a playground. When an audience member asked the panel how much money they received from KaBOOM! for their playgrounds each panelist had the same answer: "None." Several communities used KaBOOM! resources such as the toolkit, trainings and Web Portal, but when it came to finances, all five projects were community-funded. Cynthia Gentry from Atlanta advised the audience not to discount the importance of small-dollar donations. The 700 individual donations she received totaled $50,000! After growing tired of the traditional carwash fundraiser, Nicole Anderson from the Detroit Lakes Boys and Girls Club energized her community and brought in donations by holding a dog wash. Perhaps Barry Slay from the Atlanta Fairytales Learning Center offered the best advice on raising money: "You're not gonna get it if you don't ask."
ATTENDEE AT A GLANCE: Shannon Amy came to U Play! to get information about fundraising and project management for a Universally Accessible playground that the community of Idaho Falls, ID is building. The playground project has been in the works for three years and the build date is set for September 16th. Shannon would like to return to Idaho Falls with new ideas and energy to rally her community and re-ignite their support for their playground project. Shannon is also a writer for Today's Playground Magazine, a publication that focuses on topics related to play and play spaces.
