Bringing Laughter and Play Back to New Orleans
KaBOOM! and The Home Depot Kick Off First Playground Project In New Orleans Since Hurricane Katrina

On Wednesday, March 15, KaBOOM! and The Home Depot joined local residents and volunteers from SJ Green Charter School in New Orleans for a special Design Day to kick off our first playground project in the city since Hurricane Katrina struck last year.

Smiles, laughter and creativity were all around as children of all ages put crayon to paper to draw their dream playgrounds.  On May 20, more than 250 volunteers from area The Home Depot stores and the local community will turn the children’s drawings into reality when they build a new brightly colored state-of-the-art playground at the elementary school. View our photo gallery from Design Day!

Green Charter School  was in operation for just two weeks when Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005.  The building was damaged both by residents using it as an unofficial shelter and by wind, rain, and floodwater.  Yet on January 9, 2006, Green Charter School reopened to serve 350 students, kindergarten through eighth grade.  The new playground will provide not just a great place for the children to play, but also for neighbors and families to gather as the city around them continues to rebuild.

The playground will be the fifth built by KaBOOM! in the Gulf Coast region as part of Operation Playground: Rebuilding Playgrounds; Restoring Childhoods, our two-year initiative to build 100 playgrounds in Gulf Coast communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Click here to learn more about this and other Operation Playground projects.
