Vince Gill Gets Playful With KaBOOM!
By Mory Fontanez, KaBOOM!
Monday September 25th was an important day for the people of New Orleans, as the New Orleans Saints made their victorious return home to the Superdome. For the kids at the International School of Louisiana, this was an equally important day as Vince Gill joined forces with KaBOOM! and volunteers from The Home Depot, The Academy of Country Music, Hands on Network and the local community to build a brand new playground at the school. Gill was met with thank you cheers from the school children as he worked alongside volunteers throughout the entire day, helping to assemble the musical-themed playground. "I'm a big believer in kids. To bring a playground to kids, to give kids a reason to smile, to play, to forget about their problems, I'm honored to be a part of it," said Gill to the over 200 volunteers that were present that day.

We Did It!
Thank you.
Through the generosity of our friends and supporters from across the United States, KaBOOM! has raised more than $505,000 to support Operation Playground, our mission to return the gift of play to more than 50,000 Gulf Coast children whose childhoods have been shattered by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
This support will be matched by a landmark gift of $500,000 from an anonymous Mississippian and will enable KaBOOM! to rebuild eight playgrounds in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi this year - and many more in 2007.
This million-dollar success marks a great start to our project. We hope you'll stay connected over the next year, as KaBOOM! works to rebuild 100 playgrounds in all - and bring thousands of Americans together to touch the lives of children across the Gulf Coast and let families know that they have not been forgotten.
Play it Forward!

KaBOOM! Joins Nickelodeon and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to Mark Worldwide Day of Play by Encouraging Kids to Get Active
Washington, D.C., September 21, 2006 – To celebrate Nickelodeon’s third annual Worldwide Day of Play on September 30, KaBOOM! has joined with the network and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation – a joint initiative between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association - to encourage kids to go outside and be active. As part of this year’s events, KaBOOM! will ask kids across the country to go outside on September 30th and scout out their local playgrounds to include in the KaBOOM! Playspace Finder. The Playspace Finder, the newest tool on the KaBOOM! web site, is a growing directory of playgrounds across the nation. A playground checklist and rating form can be downloaded at www.kaboom.org.
On Worldwide Day of Play, KaBOOM! is asking the real playground experts – kids – to tell everyone about their playgrounds. Once kids have found, and played at their local playgrounds, they will rate and submit them to KaBOOM! for inclusion in the KaBOOM! Playspace Finder. “Kids are the original authorities on play,” said Darell Hammond, CEO and Co-Founder of KaBOOM! “Who better to find and rate playgrounds across the country than the real experts,” he said.
KaBOOM! and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation recently partnered to mobilize communities and schools to build playgrounds to help provide kids with safe, convenient and enjoyable places to play. “With the growing rate of childhood obesity in our country, it is becoming increasingly important to get our kids outside to play,” said Hammond. “We are extremely proud of our partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and honored to be a part of this year’s Worldwide Day of Play, as we all work to promote healthy childhoods,” he said.
Worldwide Day of Play is part of Nickelodeon’s “Let’s Just Play” campaign, the network’s pro-social commitment, with partner the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, to promote active, healthy, and playful lifestyles. Nickelodeon will celebrate its third annual Worldwide Day of Play by going off the air for three hours (12 noon – 3 p.m.), in order to prompt kids to go outside and be active. Over the past two years, Worldwide Day of Play has motivated more than 500,000 kids to get out and play, and more than 250,000 kids / 860 events nationwide are expected to participate this year. The September 30 Worldwide Day of Play will culminate with the finale of the Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Celebration, once the network returns to its on-air programming. For more information on how to “Go Healthy,” visit www.nick.com/letsjustplay.

KaBOOM! Challenge Grant to Raise $1 Million for Gulf Coast Children; Deadline September 25, 2006
Washington, D.C., September 20, 2006 – KaBOOM! received a $500,000 donation from an anonymous Mississippi donor to help fund Operation Playground, an initiative to rebuild 100 playgrounds in the Gulf Coast by the end of 2007. There is just one catch, KaBOOM! must match the grant by September 25, 2006. If the goal is reached, the $500,000 donation would be the largest ever received by the organization from an individual supporter.
To date, KaBOOM! has raised just over $460,000, with only $40,000 needed to meet the challenge before September 25. To meet this goal, KaBOOM! has been accepting donations from hundreds of individual donors around the country. Donors have included a group of first graders from Brownie Troop 2475 in Sudbury, Massachusetts who raised $111 through their “Chores for Charities” program, a 5-year old girl and her mother from Gig Harbor, Washington, who generated $112 by setting up a lemonade stand in their community and a Rockville, Maryland 13-year old who raised $15,000 through his Bar Mitzvah.
“We are so close to matching this generous donation,” said Darell Hammond, CEO and Co-Founder of KaBOOM! “$1 million will help give thousands of Gulf Coast children a great place to play, it is a challenge we are committed to meet,” he said.
Operation Playground is a two-year initiative by KaBOOM! to address the vital need for safe places to play throughout the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Since the inception of Operation Playground, in December 2005, KaBOOM! has worked with partners including The Home Depot, Motorola, Foresters, AmeriCares, Playworld Systems, The National Basketball Association, Mississippi Orthopaedic Society and 4th Generation Fund to rally thousands of volunteers to build playgrounds in Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Pass Christian, Jackson, Moss Point, New Orleans and many more Gulf Coast cities.
To match this grant, KaBOOM! is accepting donations through mail and their website, www.kaboom.org. In order to make the deadline, all donations must be postmarked by September 25, 2006.

Tag! Recess Isn't 'It' In A Growing Number of Schools By GEOFF MULVIHILL, Associated Press
CAMDEN, N.J. - All through lunch at Forest Hill School, fifth-grader Daijanae Upshaw picks at her food and watches the clock, waiting for her favorite part of the school day: recess.
"I like that we get to play, that we get a break from work," said the 10-year-old Tuesday as she took a breather from double Dutch jump-roping.
For Upshaw, having 15 or 20 minutes a day where kids set the agenda is not enough. To a growing number of school administrators, though, it's too much.
This week - the first-ever National Recess Week - a couple of groups and private companies are pushing back, trying to revive recess.

Elmwood Little League Shooting for Field of Dreams The contest sponsored by Granite City electrical distributor is giving away a $100,000 package -- installation of lights on a junior-sized baseball field.
BY KATE BRAMSON, Projo.com Staff Writer
PROVIDENCE, 9/14/06 -- The biggest children's baseball league in the city has to end too many games early because darkness sets in and they don't have lights on their four fields. Elmwood Little League had to turn away 50 to 75 children this year who want to play because the league just can't accommodate enough games and practices for more children when they must restrict everything to daylight hours.
In its 56th year, the league has 36 teams and more than 586 boys and girls from age 6 to 16. The league serves the Elmwood, South Elmwood, Reservoir and West End communities. Many of the children in the league come from very poor families and broken homes, according to Jim Taylor, the vice president of the league. He's pursuing many avenues and is hoping beyond hope this week that his team can win big on Sept. 26, when Granite City Electric, which lights up Fenway Park, will pull a baseball out of a tumbler and determine who wins its third Field of Dreams contest.

Nature-Deficit Disorder: Fewer Children Play Outdoors The Times Herald-Record
August 30, 2006 -- Nathan Brooks-Bushaw, 7, was grinning after he finished a two-week baseball camp at San Jose State University — he was down to the last important item on his summer to-do list.
"Play video games!" he shouted gleefully.
Ask most kids if they have played an Xbox, created a MySpace account or watched the movie "High School Musical."
Easy.
Now ask them to describe poison oak, if they've seen a wild salamander or which direction lichen grows on trees. Good luck getting answers.
One childhood advocacy expert calls it "nature-deficit disorder" and argues that American children have lost their connection to the natural world. The result, says author Richard Louv, is an epidemic of obesity, learning disabilities and depression that could be remedied if kids just got outside more.

Playing Up Playtime: It’s Kids’ Learning Gift

Playing Up Playtime: It’s Kids’ Learning Gift Awash in a world of tests, projects and structured play, children need time for imagination, experts say. By KAREN UHLENHUTH, The Kansas City Star
09/06/06 -- These are hard times for child’s play:
- Testing pressures have squeezed much of the play out of kindergarten, according to many activists and researchers. And those pressures are even trickling down to preschools.
- Parents worried about their children’s safety — and maybe hankering for some time to themselves — keep them indoors, often tethered to a television, a computer or a video game.
- And children’s toys — and their fantasy lives — run heavily toward licensed characters derived from videos and television programs created in someone else’s imagination.
All of which is to say: Whatever happened to making mud pies?

Building BOOM! Operation Playground, a project of KaBOOM!, aims to give Gulf Coast kids their own space
By Maria Montoya, The Times-Picayune
Bare. Empty. Boring.
That's how some of the fifth-graders of Medard H. Nelson UNO Charter School described the playground on their St. Bernard Avenue campus. Not that many of the students got to spend much time playing there pre-Katrina. They had a mere two days at the school before it was submerged in floodwater.
Earlier this summer, Nelson's principal, Ava Lee, got word that her school was chosen to be the site of an Operation Playground building project. A two-year initiative of the national nonprofit KaBOOM! to build 100 playgrounds in communities affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Operation Playground is committed to bringing play back to the Gulf Coast.

An Anniversary Week "Thank You"!By Darell HammondThis past week has been truly amazing for KaBOOM!, the Gulf Coast and Operation Playground. Together with our partners, The Home Depot, Hands on Network and Playworld Systems, in 4 days we helped transform 10 playspaces in 7 seven Gulf Coast communities with the help of 3,115 volunteers. We put up 8 eight structures, plus 25 slides, 27 swings, 3 dino digs, 2 playwebs and 1 LifeTrail (our first-ever, but more about that later). In temperatures that rarely dipped below 90, more than 1,400 cubic yards of mulch (enough to fill 16 semi-trucks!) was moved and nearly 1,300 bags of concrete mix (104,000 pounds all by hand!).
