Take a Break and Play! Minimize

Why the KaBOOM! National Campaign for Play?

Every community measures quality of life in countless ways. By counting—how many trees, cars, homes, people, universities, and businesses we have. KaBOOM!, a national non-profit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America, believes that play counts too.

Painted handsPlay is how kids learn to run, jump and swing. But they also learn how to negotiate, imagine and respect one another; how to think and plan without an adult telling them what to do. Kids build character as well as muscle through play. It is an essential part of their development and it is an old fashion solution to many of the modern day epidemics facing our children including obesity, anxiety, poor academic achievement and anti-social behavior.

Play also builds community. Cities and towns that fund, build, maintain and insure an abundance of time and space for play are healthier. A playground down the street becomes the gathering place for all generations and increases property values in the neighborhood. A community that demonstrates their belief in children and young families attracts new business and residents. Ultimately, a playful city is a healthy, happy, more productive city.
